Correlation between nucleation, phase transition and dynamic melt-crystallization kinetics in PAni/PVDF blends

Abstract: The dynamic melt crystallization kinetics of polyaniline (PAni)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) blends of different compositions has been investigated to understand the influence of PAni on the heterogeneous nucleation and phase transition of PVDF.

“…This shift is due to the rearrangement of PVDF crystals that leads to the formation of the β‐phase. X c decreases for PNF, PPNF, PHNF, and BNCNF mats when compared with that of pristine PVDF film, which is in line with the WAXD results . Difference in X c obtained from DSC and WAXD analysis is due to the inevitable error which may happen due to the baseline correction carried out during the analysis and also with the separation of crystalline and amorphous phase in WAXD .…”

“…This semicrystalline polymer has a complex structure with the constitutional repeating unit [CH 2 CF 2 ]. Based on the chain conformation, PVDF can exhibit five different crystalline phases, among which β phase with all trans (TTTT) planar zigzag, α phase with TGTG′ (trans‐gauche‐trans‐gauche) and γ phase with T 3 GT 3 G′ are the important phases from the practical point of view …”

“…Although the β‐phase holds the thermodynamically most stable zigzag conformation with spontaneous alignment of C − F dipoles perpendicular to the c ‐axis in the crystalline region, PVDF commonly forms α‐phase crystals containing solidified antiparallel dipoles at ambient temperatures, which are bad for its ferroelectric performance. Such a situation can be changed by employing uniaxial stretching, an electric poling field, nucleation substrate, high pressure, nano‐droplets or nano‐clay composites to generate a high content of β‐phase for good ferroelectric performance.…”
