Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, more than 15 million preterm neonates are born every year, and this number continues to increase. 1 Prematurity is the principal cause of mortality and morbidity in children. 2 The rates of morbidity and mortality increase in births before 34 weeks of gestation, because the lungs have not yet matured, which significantly affects the prognosis of neonates.Multifetal pregnancy, infection, diabetes, and hypertension are common causes of preterm birth. 1 According to American and European studies, although multiple pregnancies account for only 1%-3% of all pregnancies, they comprise 17%-20% of all preterm births. [2][3][4] The increasing use of artificial reproductive techniques and the increasing number of twin pregnancies have led to an increase in the risk of preterm birth. Because of this, recent studies have focused on identifying strategies to prevent preterm birth in twin pregnancies.
