Correlation between the Structures of GeS Glasses and that of Impurity Mn2+ Complexes

Abstract: EPR method is used to study the Mn impurity in glass system (GeS),(GeS,)loo-, for 0 5 z 5 80.Three types of M n 2 + centers homogeneously incorporated in the glass network are found. They have different coordination numbers and different magnitude and symmetry of crystal field. The dependence of the parameters of Mn2+ EPR spectra on glass composition is obtained for every Mn2+ center. The results are compared with known glass structure data.MeTOnOM 3nP HccJIeAoBaHo noBeAeHHe IIpHMeCH Mn B CTeKJIaX CHCTeMbl (Ge… Show more

“…It is striking that the g ) 4.30 peak associated with Mn 2+ varies so much in intensity with adsorbates and between MnUHM-1 (Figure 5) and Mn-UHM-1 (Figure 6). The interpretation of this g ) 4.30 peak is somewhat controversial [29][30][31][32][33][34] although it can be ascribed to transitions in the M s ) ( 3 / 2 doublet for a high-spin S ) 3 / 2 system in a rhombic ligand field. 33,34 The intensity changes may be related to the degree of rhombic distortion of the Mn 2+ environment, but we have been unable to relate this to any specific local structural model thus far.…”

“…This property is attributed to the presence of Ge/S dangling bonds. In a recent study (Zhilinskaya, Lazukin, Bychkaov and Rosenkov 1988) of Mn impurity in the glass system (GeS), (GeS,),,, -, (0 < x < 80) using the ESR method, three types of Mn2 + centres homogeneously incorporated in the glass network have been found. Appearance of each Mn2+ centre is connected with the existence of certain structural units in the host Ge-S glass network.…”
