Fiber length stands out among technological traits as one that still needs to be improved in cotton. Thus, the objectives of this work were to quantify the interrelations between agronomic and technological fiber traits and to identify traits that could be used for the indirect selection of cotton genotypes with longer fiber lengths. Agronomic and technological traits were evaluated in 36 elite lines of cotton that were cultivated in three environments. Canonical correlations were estimated between two groups of traits: agronomic and technological. Path analysis was performed that considered fiber length as the primary dependent variable. The genotypes presented variability in all the evaluated traits, and no significant genotype vs. environmental interaction was observed for any of them. The main technological traits of cotton crops can be improved by an indirect selection of agronomic traits. The selection of cotton genotypes with a smaller size and a higher mean boll weight can be used to increase fiber length and improve other technological traits. Selection indices containing plant height, mean boll weight, fiber strength, and fiber uniformity can be one of the main strategies for the selection of cotton genotypes with a high yield of cotton bolls and long fibers.

 RESUMO: O arroz (Oryza sativa) representa um dos mais importantes grãos em termos de valor econômico, destacando-se como o segundo cereal mais cultivado e um dos mais consumidos em todo mundo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi propor o método de Projeção de Distâncias, para auxiliar na classificação de genótipos de arroz irrigado quanto à adaptabilidade e estabilidade. O delineamento utilizado foi de blocos casualizados em três locais e avaliados em quatro anos, perfazendo um total de 12 ambientes. Previamente foram realizadas análise de variância e análises de adaptabilidade e estabilidade por meio dos Métodos de Eberhart e Russel (1966) e Centroide para posteriores análises gráficas por meio do Método de Projeção de Distâncias proposto neste estudo. As projeções foram construídas sob dois princípios, a saber, complemento do coeficiente de determinação ou distância de Gower. Os resultados indicaram grandes potencialidades do método gráfico proposto. As representações gráficas fornecidas pelo método Projeção de Distâncias, facilitaram o reconhecimento do padrão de interação G x E dos genótipos de arroz avaliados, tendo em vista as dificuldades de interpretação e discordância entre os resultados das metodologias de Eberhart e Russell e Centroide. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Oryza sativa; classificação; interação G×E; zoneamento. ABSTRACT. Given the importance of selecting lines to obtain hybrids, we aimed to verify the relationship between morphological traits that can be used as the criteria for the selection of sorghum lines with high grain yield and earliness. A total of 18 traits were evaluated in 160 sorghum elite lines, in an incomplete block design with two replicates. A correlation network was used to graphically express the estimates of phenotypic and genotypic correlations between the traits. Two path analyses were processed, the first considering grain yield and the second considering flowering as the principle dependent variable. In general, most of the variation in the grain yield and flowering of 2 K.J. da Silva et al.Genetics and Molecular Research 16 (2): gmr16029649 sorghum lines was explained by the traits evaluated. Selecting sorghum lines with greater width of the third leaf blade from flag leaf, panicle weight, and panicle harvest index might lead to increased grain yield, and selecting sorghum genotypes with higher plant height might lead to reduced earliness and increased grain yield. Thus, the results suggest the establishment of selection indices aiming at simultaneously increasing the grain yield and earliness in sorghum genotypes.
