“…Of these, 22 were excluded, mainly because they were not a test accuracy study, were duplicate publications, or did not report original data. A total of 43 studies, including 10,203 women, met the inclusion criteria, of which nine provided data on asymptomatic women (n=6131), 36-44 28 on symptomatic women (n=3212), 18,45-71 and six on both asymptomatic (n=452) and symptomatic (n=408) women. 17,72-76 …”

“…45,48,55,58,60,61,68 Twelve studies (35%) did not include cervical changes in the diagnosis of preterm labor; 17,46,50,51,59,65,66,72-76 ; one study included women with or without cervical changes; 18 and 14 studies did not report clearly on the definition of preterm labor. 47,49,52-54,56,57,62-64,67,69-71 All studies were limited to women with intact membranes. Two studies included exclusively twin gestations, both in asymptomatic women.…”

“…Of these, IGFBP1 was increased 16-fold in the presence of intra-amniotic infection, and this is a potential biomarker for clinical application. Many other studies have investigated levels of inflammatory cytokines and proteins in cervico-vaginal fluids, and candidate proteins such as IL-6 have been consistently identified (159, 160), but these have not yielded biomarkers with sufficient prognostic utility to be useful clinically. Georgiou and colleagues employed proteomic analysis of cervico-vaginal fluid samples in at-risk asymptomatic women to identify candidate biomarkers of impending preterm delivery (161).…”

“…admission to the hospital, administration of steroids, transfer to a tertiary care center, etc.). This has been the basis for the evaluation of cervical length [4256], fetal fibronectin [5775], alpha-macroglobulin-1 [7679], insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 [8089], and the concentration of inflammatory mediators in the amniotic fluid [90–116] and cervicovaginal fluid [88, 108, 117126] in patients presenting with increased uterine contractility or suspected preterm labor.…”
