“…Therefore, by measuring the PWV of the aorta, the degree of atherosclero sis can be evaluated. Hasegawa et al [21,22] have made a detailed study of PWV in healthy individuals and patients with dia betes and cerebral infarction in Japan, and showed that PWV correlates with the degree of atherosclerosis. In this study, PWV was higher in hemodialyzed patients compared to sex-and age-matched healthy controls, which indicated that atherosclerosis was ag gravated in hemodialyzed patients.…”

“…Regard- less of the primary disease, the plasma lipid profile in the dialyzed patients was type IV of the WHO classification and the athero genic index was high, which are also factors that exacerbate atherosclerosis [23,24], PWV did not correlate with this lipid profile, but the degree of type IV hyperlipidemia had a positive correlation with the decrease in PGE2 and 6-keto-PGF|" and increase in the TXB2/6-keto-PGFia ratio, though not signif icantly, which suggested that there may be some relation between type IV hyperlipid emia and blood PGs [25][26][27]. On the other hand, PWV had a positive correlation with the increase in TXB2 and the TXB2/6-ketoPGF|a ratio, which suggested that the im pairment in blood PGs may be involved in atherosclerosis [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9], As to the effects of diabetes, Hasegawa et al [22] and other researchers have reported that PWV is significantly higher in diabetic patients compared to healthy controls [28,29]. Therefore, PWV in patients with dia betic nephropathy in our study was thought to be higher than in nondiabetic patients.…”
