Correlation of MLH and mpv by Data of the Network of Seismic Stations of the U.S.S.R.

Abstract: The problem of maintaining uniform magnitude scales is important in seismology. It is shown that the surface wave magnitudes measured in the Soviet Union (MLH) are in good agreement with those from Pasadena, Berkeley and Palisades, and are considered to be a good continuation of M as used by Gutenberg and Richter in their catalogue. Body wave magnitudes, however, show a systematic difference between USCGS and Russian determinations, the Coast and Geodetic Survey values being significantly lower. Several possib… Show more

“…All earthquakes before 1960 have been relocated. The body wave magnitudes of earthquakes after February 1963 are those given by the USCGS and are systematically low (Bune et al 1970). Those for earlier shocks, marked with a cross, are from a number of different sources.…”

“…However, their corrections cannot be compared with those from other studies as they have been calculated with respect to a zero station correction for Obninsk (OBN). The same applies for the station corrections determined by Bune et al (1970) for the major seismographic stations in the former USSR.…”

“…
In a recent paper (Bune et al 1970), a comparison of USSR and NOS (formerly C & GS) values was made and suggestions given for modifying NOS procedures. The paper also pointed out some of the problems of magnitude determination.

“…It is the intention of this communication to examine items raised in the Bune, et al (1970) paper and other more relevant aspects of magnitude determination. As a first step in this direction, we present a comparison of the USSR network data taken from trimonthly bulletins and the NOS data taken from PDE reports.…”
