Detailed correlations of the terrestrial sequences to the deep-ocean oxygen isotope stratigraphy have shown that only isotope substage 5e corresponds to the last interglacial (the Eemian) on land [Mangerud et al, 1979;Turon, 1984], and that substages 5d-5a and stage 4 most probably all correspond to the early Weichselian [Mangerud, 1991]. The studied time interval represents both the initiation and demise of the last interglacial and the stadial-interstadial cycles from the early part of the last glacial cycle.…”

Correlation of the Eemian and the weichselian with deep sea oxygen isotope stratigraphy

“…Thus Mtiller was able to estimate the duration of the Eemian to around 11 ka' He concluded that this would support the correlation of Shackleton, as 5e is estimated to have lasted some 13 ka, whereas the entire Stage 5 lasted more than 55 ka' (3) Zagwijn (1983) demonstrated that during the Eemian there was one single transgression in the Netherlands, with a regression of minimum 30 m at the Eemiar/Weichselian transition. As pointed out by Mangerud et al (1979) this is incompatible with a correlation of the Eemian with more than one of the peaks of Stage 5, because each peak was paralleled by a iransgression and subsequent regression (Chappell and Shackleton, 1986).…”

“…The last time surface water of the Norwegian Sea was as warm as during the Holocene was during Substage 5e, later it was iooler (Kellog et al, 1978;Belanger, 1982) ' Mangerud et al (1979) demonstrated that a similar warm water pulse was restricted to the Eemian, as defined by the pollen stratigraphy of the marine sediments at Fj0sanger, western Norway' Thus the Eemian is tied directly to Isotope Substage 5e' (5) Turon (1984) demonstrated that the Eemian correlates with 5e by doing pollen analysis of a core raised some 100 km west of Portugal. An isotope stratigraphy was already established in the same core.…”
