Steels are multiphase alloys with an increasingly complex constitution. This complexity of steel microstructures has been recognized since the birth of steel physical metallurgy. Non-metallic inclusions have also been very early recognized as relevant to the understanding of steel behavior. With the advances in precipitation hardening and grain size control, many precipitate phases gained importance in steel design. Around 1950-70 the term "second phases" was coined as an all-encompassing definition that would cover non-metallic inclusions as well as fine precipitates such as nitrides and carbonitrides even in steels that already had a multi-phase constitution. While this classification may be practical in some cases, we argue that it hinders the proper understanding of the origin and effects of particles in steel and unduly complicates the understanding of the phenomena in which they take part. In this work, we briefly review the origin of the second phase particle concept and discuss the critical properties of particles with respect to their influence on steel behavior. Through several examples, we propose that size and volume fraction are the main variables in evaluating how particles affect steels. While chemical composition is key to understanding the origin of the particles, we suggest that these variables are, together with interface properties, the most relevant to understand the effect of particles on steel behavior.

Resumo Aços para vergalhões são especificados pelas propriedades mecânicas. Os desenvolvimentos, nestes aços, são, em geral, focados no projeto de composições químicas e ciclos de processamento que resultem em custo mínimo, e conformidade com os requisitos. Uma opção interessante é o uso de microligas. Elementos como V e Nb tem sido usados.Nb, em particular, pode contribuir para melhorar as propriedades no ensaio de tração através do refino do grão austenítico, endurecimento por precipitação na ferrita e por aumento da temperabilidade. Neste trabalho é apresentado oprimeiro estágio do projeto de liga e caracterização de um aço microligado ao Nb para esta aplicação. O aço atendeu a especificação visada. Observou-se refino de grão austenítico em relação a composiçãousual para esta aplicação, sem mudança no processamento termomecânico. Os resultados indicam que o uso do Nb como microligante tem bom potencial para a aplicação e que, possivelmente, propriedades ainda melhores podem ser obtidas com a otimização do ciclo de processamento. High‐nitrogen stainless bearing steel (HNSBS) is the most representative third‐generation aviation bearing steel, and the cleanliness and microstructure characteristics of bearing steel are crucial to its high performance and long service life. In this work, the effect of cerium addition on the cleanliness and microstructure characteristics of as‐cast HNSBS was systematically studied by combining microstructural characterization and thermodynamic analysis methods. The results show that with increasing Ce content, the cleanliness of steel first improved and then decreased, and Ce2O2S, Ce2O3 and CeN inclusions were generated successively. The Ce content should be controlled to ≈0.012 wt% to ensure that all Al2O3, MgO · Al2O3, and MnS inclusions were modified, and minimize the formation of large‐size Ce‐bearing inclusions. Furthermore, cerium addition refined the dendrite structure due to more nucleation sites for γ‐Fe and the enrichment of Ce in the liquid phase at solidifying front. The finer and more dispersed distribution in precipitates was ascribed to the reduction of growth space and Cr segregation, as well as the increase in effective nucleation sites. These results can offer theoretical guidance for inhibiting the formation of harmful inclusions in high‐nitrogen alloy systems and refining the microstructure of alloy systems containing M23(C, N)6 and M2(C, N) precipitates.
