Correlational study of impacted and non-functional lower third molar position with occurrence of pathologies

Abstract: BackgroundLower third molar (M3) eruption is unpredictable. The purpose of this study was to correlate radiographic position of M3 on a preexistent film with the current clinical, histopathological, and radiographic findings.MethodsA retrospective cohort study was performed. The sample was collected from a database of patients covered by Medical Fund of Brazilian Army. Radiographs were obtained a minimum of 5 years prior to the presurgical visit and after their clinical exam. The primary outcome variables were… Show more

“…This finding reinforces the theory of previous studies. 4,5,11,[20][21][22][23][24] One of our patients who had ERR Examination of ERR on the root surface, especially in the early stages, requires 3D imaging. In a recent study, CBCT and panoramic radiography were compared and the 2 methods corresponded in only 4.3% of cases.…”

“…La prevalencia de caries distales en segundos molares adyacentes a terceros molares en este estudio fue alrededor de un cuarto de la muestra. Diversos estudios han presentado prevalencias de esta patología que van desde 14,5% (Li et al, 2017), 25,4% (Marques et al, 2017), 35,7% (Chou et al, 2917), 39% (Bokhari et al, 2017), hasta 46,9% (Camargo et al, 2016).…”

“…The relationship of the third molar with the adjacent second molar is an additional concern for developing pathologies [3]. In fact, a very common culprit of such malposition is pericoronitis [4]. Several authors have attempted to evaluate the position of third molar impaction and the development of pericoronitis, with conflicting conclusions [5].…”
