Abstract

Confrontations Psychiatriques 21 (1982): 149-62.The impressionistic observation of Swiss Professor Ren6 Tissot that there would be an unusually high frequency of visual hallucinations among Mexican schizophrenics led the authors to review the records of 161 patients with this diagnosis followed at the National Institute of Neurology in Mexico. Their findings indicate that over 66 percent of males and almost 90 percent of females reported visual hallucinations. The frequency of auditory hallucinations is similarly high, and visual and auditory hallucinations show extensive overlap. The authors' interpretations of these data ranges from the suggestion of higher metabolism of glucose in the visual cortex of the brain to the impact of the Mexican culture, whose major components are visual rather than verbal.
