Correlative light and electron microscopy of wall formation in Eimeria nieschulzi

Abstract: Coccidian parasites possess complex life cycles involving asexual proliferation followed by sexual development leading to the production of oocysts. Coccidian oocysts are persistent stages which are secreted by the feces and transmitted from host to host guaranteeing life cycle progression and disease transmission. “…Immuno uorescence with anti-GAM22 and anti-GAM59 as markers revealed that macrogametocyte development and oocyst wall formation in E. necatrix was similar to those of E. maxima [10,17], E. tenella [17,18], E. acervuline [17] and E. nieschulzi [19], revealing that the structure of macrogametocytes and formation of the oocyst wall are strongly conserved across Eimeria species.
