“…Preferably, the abdominal wall defect is completely closed with native tissue and a mesh is used to reinforce the repair. A bridged repair—in which the defect is not completely closed with native tissue but bridged with mesh - is associated with a high risk of hernia recurrence and should be avoided [ 1 ]. In patients with a large hernia defect or with a large amount of peritoneal content residing outside the abdominal cavity (loss of domain), it may be difficult or even impossible to close the abdomen without the use of additional strategies.…”
