Corrosion avoidance in lightweight materials for automotive applications

Abstract: Due to increasing vehicle greenhouse gas emission regulations across the globe, the automotive industry is facing pressure to improving fuel economy. The key to achieving this is reducing vehicle mass and developing alternative energy vehicles, thereby reducing environmental impact. Lightweighting has become one of the most important aspects to consider in the design and manufacture of modern vehicles, while electric vehicles require a different approach to design and build. All the aforementioned factors have… Show more

“…Hence, promoting the understanding of the fundamental principles of corrosion behavior paves the path to further enhancement of corrosion protection for Mg and extends its industrial application. [1][2][3] It has been extensively acknowledged that hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the main cathodic reaction during Mg corrosion at neutral or even alkaline conditions unlike other metals (zinc, iron etc. ), where oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the main cathodic process.…”

“…Self-piercing rivets (SPRs), a type of mechanical fastener for joining sheet materials, are considered as a high potential solution for CFRP/metal joining [ 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Unlike conventional SPR specimens, the hole drilling of CFRP is required to avoid galvanic corrosion of the rivet interface between CFRP and metal [ 12 , 13 ]. In particular, pre-hole machining is regarded as essential for SPR application to high-tension steel plates (HTSP), for the purpose of enhancing the safety of motor vehicles.…”

“…Water, along with dirt, can enter the ball joint fittings and initiate corrosion, which can cause the front lower control arm to separate from the vehicle. This would make it more difficult to drive, thus increasing the risk of an accident [ 2 ]. Problems can occur when joining different materials.…”
