Corrosion Behavior and Mechanism of Basalt Fibers in Sodium Hydroxide Solution

Abstract: In this paper, the corrosion mechanism and tensile properties of basalt fibers in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution with various concentrations and temperatures were studied. The hydroxyl ions disrupt the –Si–O–Si– and –Si–O–Al– bonds leading to the formation of insoluble hydroxides. With the continuation of the hydration reaction, a hydration layer (corrosion shell) with high content of calcium, iron, manganese and titanium ions was formed on the fiber surface. The corrosion shell enabled an increase in the st… Show more

“…Among the various natural fibers basalt fiber is gaining popularity recently, owing to its features such as immense strength, good bonding between resin and capability to produce easily. Researchers assured that the beneficial of different forms of basalt fibers in the areas such as resistance to corrosion material in the chemistry industry [3], resistance to abrasive wear and friction material in the transportation sector [4], resistance to impact, strengthening material for construction. Special characteristics of basalt fibers are that they don't have any toxic reaction with air or water.…”

“…Table 5 displays a fairly significant difference in iron oxide between types A, B and type C: type A-12.6%; type B-11.6%; and type C-16.7%. With regard to chemical composition analysis of degraded basalt fibers, Tang et al [34] studied the alkali resistance of basalt fibers in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, and they noted that the presence of TiO 2 , MnO, Fe 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 is slowing alkaline corrosion.…”

“…The fiber underneath the shell remains intact, and the fiber diameter decreases. The whole cycle is repeated over time [ 4 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. In the second mode, small holes form on the fiber surface, which increases in size to significant holes and cracks.…”

“…However, the long-term chemical resistance of mineral fibers cannot be accurately determined by using one or two methods. The fiber tensile strength test is another method for determining the chemical resistance [ 4 , 8 , 10 , 11 ]. The tensile strength of corroded basalt fibers shows two trends: a general decrease with temperature or exposure time, a cyclical decrease, and an increase depending on the phase of corrosion shell formation [ 4 , 7 , 10 ].…”
