Corrosion Behaviour of CNT Reinforced AA 7075 Nanocomposites

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes reinforced AA 7075 alloy was fabricated by powder metallurgy route. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized by electric arc discharge method. Different mass fraction of CNTs was added to the AA 7075 and the powder mixtures were consolidated using uniaxial press. The consolidated samples were sintered at 600˚ C in inert atmosphere followed by hot compaction at 450˚ C. The electrochemical corrosion behaviour of AA 7075 and CNT reinforced AA 7075 was studied using Electrochemical … Show more

“…Thirumaran et al published that when using multi walled carbon nanotubes (0.50, 1.00, 1.50 and 2.00 wt.%) in Al 7075, the corrosion rate was gradually increased due to the galvanic effect. 4 On the other hand, Ujah et al published that with the use of multi walled carbon nanotubes (1.00, 4.00 and 8.00 wt.%) in Al, the lowest corrosion rate was observed with 4.00 wt. % of the carbon nanotube.…”

“…With the addition of HTC, in addition to these cracks on grain boundaries, some pits occurred as an expected result of the galvanic effect of the reinforcement materials. 2,4 Since the HTCs are distributed into Al 7075 homogenously, the pits occurred at different regions of the samples, and they are smaller than grain boundary cracks. Also, the cracks on grain boundaries are shorter (Figure 10(b) to (d)).…”

“…The corrosion behavior of metal matrix composites and nanocomposites has been thoroughly investigated and reported [50][51][52][53][54] , however, it was not considered for hybrid ceramic matrix nanocomposites. Therefore, the corrosion rates of the alumina and Al 2 O 3 -5SiC-2CNT nanocomposite samples were compared with those of some metals and metal matrix nanocomposites 50,[55][56][57][58][59][60][61] and presented in Table 2. It can be clearly seen that the Al 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 -5SiC-2CNT nanocomposite have relatively low corrosion rates.…”
