Corrosion inhibition of high strength maraging steel by cerium(III) ions in sulfuric acid solution

Abstract: The influence of rare earth Ce(III) ions on the corrosion behaviour of high strength maraging steel in 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution was studied by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Ce 3þ can significantly reduce corrosion deterioration up to 5.0 mM. Beyond that level the corrosion rate increases till a steady value. High corrosion protection of steel surface after exposure to the acidic solution containing the optimal Ce(III) concentration is revealed by … Show more

“…On the other hand, rare earth salts have been successfully used for corrosion protection in aqueous environments of aluminium alloys and galvanized steel. References to the use of lanthanide chlorides or nitrates (as LaCl 3 , CeCl 3 , or Ce(NO 3 ) 3 ) for corrosion inhibition of aluminium alloys, steel, and galvanized steel are found in the literature. In a previous work, the effect of rare earth metals (Ce, Er, Y) addition on the corrosion behavior of Zn‐5%Al (Galfan) alloy in neutral aerated sodium sulphate solution has been investigated.…”

“…Similarly, organic compounds especially those with S, N and O showed significant inhibition efficiency, but unfortunately most of those compounds are not only expensive but also possess high toxicity to living beings and are now being abandoned due to recent environmental legislation. Among rare earth compounds, cerium salts have successfully been used to inhibit the corrosion processes on mild steel and galvanised steel in NaCl solutions, on cold rolled steel in HCl, H 2 SO 4 and H 3 PO 4 solutions, as well as on high strength maraging steel in H 2 SO 4 solution . In a previous work, cerium(III) was utilised to enhance the corrosion resistance of TRIP 800 steel in HCl solution.…”
