Corrosion Inhibitory Effects of Some Schiff's Bases on Mild Steel in Acid Media

Abstract: Weight loss and thermometric methods have been used to study the corrosion inhibition of mild steel in acidic solution (HCl and H 2 SO 4 ) by Schiff's bases viz. N-(4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzal)-p-anisidine (SB 1 ), N-(4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzal)-p-toluidine (SB 2 ) and N-(4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzal)-2,4-dinitroaniline (SB 3 ). The efficiencies have been compared with those of parent amines from which Schiff's bases have been derived. Results of inhibition efficiencies observed from these two methods are in good ag… Show more

“…It is also possible that the inhibitor molecules studied can be adsorbed on the anodic and cathodic sites resulting in deviation from unit gradient. Similar observations have been reported by Sethi et al [116] and other authors [34,117,118]. It has been assumed that organic inhibitors establish their inhibition via adsorption of the inhibitors onto the metal surface.…”

“…Although it was reported by Solomon et al, [16] that the plots are linear as depicted by correlation coefficient (R 2 ) values (0.99) as value of unity from the slopes are expected from ideal Langmuir adsorption equation. It has been postulated in the deviation of Langmuir isotherm equation that adsorbed molecules does not interact with one another which [16] claimed not to be true due to large organic molecule in plant extract having polar atoms or groups which can be adsorbed on the cathodic and anodic site of the metal resulting in deviation from unit gradient which also reported by other researcher [30].…”

“…2. The electrochemical corrosion parameters such as corrosion current density (I corr ), corrosion potential (E corr versus SCE), cathodic and anodic Tafel slopes (b a , b c ) the degree of surface coverage (θ) and the inhibition efficiency (IE%= θ×100) obtained by extrapolation of the Tafel lines [15] are shown in Table 1. These results demonstrate that the compound act as an effective inhibitor for mild steel in alkaline NaCl solution.…”
