Corrosion of aluminum alloys Al 6061 and Al 2024 in ammonium nitrate‐urea solution

Abstract: The corrosion behavior of two aluminum alloys Al 6061 T6 and Al 2024 T3 was investigated in a low carbon fuel consisting of concentrated aqueous solutions of ammonium nitrate and urea (ANU). Weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques were applied to study the alloys corrosion behavior. Results obtained showed that a corrosion resistance passive film was formed on the surface of both aluminum alloys in solutions of pure ANU and ANU containing up to 1% NaCl. … Show more

“…On the other hand, in the presence of nitrate ions, they are found to promote the passivation of Al alloys even in a chloride containing environment. 79 Nonetheless, nitrate ions not only act distinctly according to their concentration in the solution, but exercise a different effect on the Al matrix and the Cu-rich intermetallic. For instance, C. Blanc et al 80 reported that when nitrates ( ) − NO 3 come in contact with Cu-rich IMC in AA2024, they are reduced to nitrite ( ) − NO 2 which in turn are reduced to form NH 3 (Eqs.…”

“…Liu and Cheng did some research about the effects of Cl − , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Mg 2+ on the corrosion of 3003 aluminum alloy in automotive cooling system. Other researchers studied the corrosion behaviors of aluminum alloy in solutions containing ions at various concentrations . To our knowledge, there are few investigations concentrating on the effect of anion component in flue gas condensate on the corrosion behavior of aluminum alloy.…”

“…1 Additionally, formation of an oxide layer on the aluminium surface effectively prevents corrosion from occurring. 2 Consequently, aluminium has been used to produce radiators of cooling systems for converter valves of high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission engineering technologies. During the operation of a converter valve, a large amount of heat is generated, and is carried away by the aluminium radiator and cooling water to maintain the normal operating temperature of the converter valve.…”
