Corrosion resistance of 6061-T6 aluminium alloy and its feasibility of near-surface reinforcements in concrete structure

Abstract: The durability of concrete structures is often reduced owing to the corrosion of reinforcement in an aggressive environment. Ordinary reinforcement methods, such as wrapping section steel or steel plate, are also vulnerable to corrosion. Using 6061-T6 aluminium alloy as near-surface reinforcement of the concrete structure is a feasible method. In this study, the corrosion resistance of 6061-T6 aluminium alloy bars was studied by simulating the coastal environment, atmospheric environment, and concrete internal… Show more

“…Humid conditions can significantly influence the material properties of aluminium alloys, often increasing the challenges posed by the marine atmosphere. Daming et al [98] studied the corrosion resistance of aluminium alloy under high humidity conditions. High humidity levels prevalent in coastal areas enhance moisture absorption by aluminium alloys.…”

“…This material is widely used in shipbuilding, automotive, aviation, construction, packaging, and other fields, such as the body of Boeing 747 and Airbus A320, engine covers and doors of BMW and Audi cars, etc. The 6XXX aluminum alloy [ 38 , 39 , 40 ] is an aluminum–magnesium–silicon alloy, with magnesium, silicon, manganese, and other elements as its main components. It combines the advantages of 4XXX and 5XXX aluminum alloys, with high strength, good corrosion resistance, and ductility, and is widely used in automotive, aviation, construction, sports equipment, and other fields.…”

“…When a reinforced concrete structure is subjected to a complex external environment, its internal steel bars are susceptible to corrosion failure [11]. The corrosion of steel bars reduces the effective cross-sectional area of steel bars [12,13], the tensile strength and ductility of steel bars [14][15][16] and the bond strength between steel bars and concrete [17,18], limiting the load-bearing capacity and durability of reinforced concrete structures [19][20][21][22]. To ensure the safety and service life of the structure, the use of ECC to reinforce steel bar concrete structures with bonding properties between the two is critical, ensuring the success of the steel bars.…”
