Corrosion Resistance of Calcium Aluminate Cement Concrete Exposed to a Chloride Environment

Abstract: The present study concerns a development of calcium aluminate cement (CAC) concrete to enhance the durability against an externally chemically aggressive environment, in particular, chloride-induced corrosion. To evaluate the inhibition effect and concrete properties, CAC was partially mixed with ordinary Portland cement (OPC), ranging from 5% to 15%, as a binder. As a result, it was found that an increase in the CAC in binder resulted in a dramatic decrease in the setting time of fresh concrete. However, the … Show more

“…After reaching an OD 600 the bacteria were collected by centrifugation and used for polyP extraction, following the described procedure [51]. Samples were successively extracted by applying a procedure that avoids hydrolysis of long-chain polyP [52]. Protein was removed from the extracts with phenol/chloroform (1:1 ( v / v )), followed by three successive extractions with chloroform.…”

“…The development of cracking in concrete structures is one of the major factors influencing the durability of structures. Cracks accelerate the penetration of water and the diffusion of harmful ions, such as chloride, leading to damage and durability problems [ 10 ]. Therefore, the use of HPFRCC can contribute to enhancing the durability of structures by smearing one or several dominant cracks into many finely distributed cracks, even under severely loaded conditions.…”

“…This may be ascribed to the chemical equilibrium for chloride ions at the interface between specimen surface and solution. The higher Al 2 O 3 content in cement clinker would enhance the formation of chloroaluminate hydrates, which often would result from a reaction between cement paste and free chlorides to remove/immobilise them from the pore solution [10,19]. The higher chloride binding capacity, resulting from increased C 3 A content, may impose increased concentration of bound chloride on the surface of concrete at a given free chloride concentration due to the chemical balance between concrete surface and saline media [20].…”
