Cortical gyrification in children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and prenatal alcohol exposure

Abstract: Background: An improved understanding of the neurodevelopmental differences between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with and without prenatal alcohol exposure (ADHD + PAE and ADHD−PAE, respectively) is needed. Herein, we evaluated gyrification (cortical folding) in children with ADHD + PAE compared to that in children with familial ADHD−PAE and typically developing (TD) children. Methods: ADHD + PAE (n = 37), ADHD−PAE (n = 25), and TD children (n = 27), aged 8–… Show more

“…The current findings are also compatible with research linking inhibitory control to both ERI and right OFC (28,70,82,83). Furthermore, the association of lower LGI in right lateral OFC with higher ERI is consistent with previous work showing that lower LGI is associated with worse cognitive and behavioral functioning in other domains (84,85). In sum, our results dovetail with literatures on ERI, OFC function, and inhibitory control.…”

“…Executive function is often globally impaired with specific deficits in domains of set shifting/flexibility, concept formation/problem solving, planning, working memory, and inhibitory control, particularly on tasks involving complex information processing [ 50 , 58 ]. Notably, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is highly comorbid with FASD, and individuals with PAE and ADHD may demonstrate unique cognitive profiles and neurological abnormalities [ 59 ].…”

“…To increase insight in detailed brain development of alcohol exposed fetuses, it is important to perform repeated ultrasound examinations during pregnancy, preferably with advanced techniques such as three-dimensional neurosonography [ 56 , 57 ]. Additionally, different structures including the cerebellum, corpus callosum, thalami, and cortical folding processes should be examined [ 58 60 ].…”
