“…-Comparative assays on desoxycorticosterone and cortin in adrenalectomized rats by the muscular fatigue method show that the former is inactive by mouth, but is active when sub cutaneously administered and that it possesses some progesterone action. "Cortin" is active by mouth in adrenal insufficiency but does not exhibit progesterone activity (101). In adrenalectomized dogs kept on a low sodium and chloride diet, the daily injection of 1 to 1.5 mg. desoxycorticosterone, dissolved in oil, maintains a 10 kg.…”

“…The first compound isolated from the adrenal gland which had significant cortin activity was named corticosterone by Reichstein (18,19). Other cortin-active constituents were later named according to their structural relation to corticosterone, namely, dehydrocorticosterone, 17-hydroxycorticosterone, 17-hydroxydehydrocorticosterone and desoxycorticosterone.…”

“…In the case of the progestational properties of cortical hormone it has been shown that desoxycorticosterone acetate produces a progesta¬ tional reaction in the uterus of the rabbit in doses of 5-10 mg. (i.e. 5 to 10 times as much as the required amount of progesterone) [Miescher, Fischer & Tschopp, 1938;de Fremery & Spanhoff, 1939;Robson, 1939;Heuverswyn, Collins, Williams, & Gardner, 1939], and in the cat [Leathern & Crafts, 1940]. Like progesterone, desoxycorticosterone is also able (a) to maintain pregnancy in spayed mice and in spayed and hypophysectomized rabbits, (b) to suppress the response of the rabbit uterus to pituitrin, (c) to suppress the oestrous cycle in mice and (d) to inhibit the effects of oestrone [Robson, 1939].…”
