Corynebacterium propinquum Associated With Acute, Nongonococcal Urethritis

Abstract: Corynebacterium propinquum is usually considered part of the normal human oropharyngeal flora and is rarely responsible for clinical infection. We report here what seems to be the first case of acute purulent urethral discharge in a young Iranian man with urethritis acquired after orogenital contact. Attention should be devoted to less common nondiphtheriae Corynebacterium species for differential diagnosis.

“…The next closest relative of C34 is Corynebacterium propinquum (Supporting Information Fig. S1), a pathogen known in humans (Díez-Aguilar et al, 2013), that can be sexually transmitted (Abdolrasouli & Roushan, 2013). C34 also clusters closely with the pathogenic C. pseudodiphtheriticum (Díez-Aguilar et al, 2013) and more distantly with the causative agent of diphtheria (C. diphtheriae) and the pathogenic C. pseudotuberculosis (Supporting Information, Fig.…”

“…It has also been reported as the causative agent in a handful of respiratory tract infections worldwide [68]. It has also been reported to cause acute nongonococcal urethritis in one patient from Iran [11]. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Corynebacterium propinquum causing prosthetic valve endocarditis.…”

“…propinquum (formerly called CDC coryneform group ANF-3) is considered a member of the normal oropharynx and skin flora. It has occasionally been involved in opportunistic infections such as respiratory infections 6-8 , bacteremia 9 , endocarditis 10 , pleural effusion 11 , osteoarticular infections 12,13 , trichomycosis axillaris 14 , non-gonococcal urethritis 15 , and contact lens related keratitis 16 . Previous hospitalization, immunosuppression, chronic corticosteroid therapy, previous broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, and underlying respiratory disease are the risk factors shared in most of the published cases of C. propinquum infections.…”
