Cosmic strings in unified gauge theories

Abstract: Some spontaneously broken gauge theories can give rise to stringlike vacuum structures (vortices). It has been pointed out by Vilenkin that in grand unified theories these can be sufficiently massive to have cosmological implications, e.g., in explaining the formation of galaxies.

“…Such loops are relevant mainly at early times or for small string tensions µ. After a possible early friction-dominated evolution (where the motion of the strings is heavily damped due to their interactions with particles in the high-density thermal plasma [61,62]), a network of cosmic strings enter a scaling regime where its energy density remains a fixed fraction of the total energy density of the universe. The effect of the friction-dominated epoch, in particular for cosmic super-strings, will be discussed in subsection IV B.…”

“…After their formation at time t f ∼ t Pl /(Gµ), the motion of field theory cosmic strings is usually heavily damped due to their interactions with the high-density thermal plasma of the universe [61,62]. This friction-dominated, or damped evolution ends at the time [1] …”

“…Cosmic strings play an important role in the study of the early universe. These strings arise during the phase transition after the big bang explosion as the temperature goes down below some critical temperature as predicted by grand unified theories [1][2][3][4][5]. It is believed that cosmic strings give rise to density perturbations which lead to formation of galaxies [6].…”

“…The presence of strings in the early universe can be explained using grand unified field theories as investigated by Kibble [1,2], Everett [3] and Vilenkin [4]. It is believed that the very early universe underwent phase transition giving some topological stable structure.…”
