Cosmicflows-3

Abstract: The Cosmicflows database of galaxy distances that in the second edition contained 8188 entries is now expanded to 17,669 entries. The major additions are 2257 distances that we have derived from the correlation between galaxy rotation and luminosity with photometry at m 3.6 m obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope and 8885 distances based on the Fundamental Plane methodology from the Six Degree Field Galaxy Survey collaboration.

“…Unfortunately, such data for the SGW region are not yet available. Even for the local superclusters, uncertainties are large (Tully et al 2016). However, we can study the effect of peculiar velocities indirectly and compare the galaxy distribution in the sky plane and in the radial direction.…”

“…The second cut removes stars and very nearby galaxies whose photometry is likely to be less accurate because of their large angular size (West et al 2010), and whose redshifts are poorer indications of the distance (Tully et al 2016). GSWLC therefore includes the entire MGS, complemented by MGSlike galaxies from other programs that fall within the brightness (and, effectively, the redshift) cut of MGS: 5.2% from BOSS (typically ellipticals), and the remaining 2.1% from other surveys (QSO, SEGUE).…”

“…The Hyper LyonMeudon Extragalactic Database (HyperLeda) catalog provides nearly 7000 distance estimates for more than 2000 galaxies found in 430 references (Makarov et al 2014). Finally, the Extragalactic Distances Database (EDD), an ongoing project by Tully et al (2009Tully et al ( , 2013Tully et al ( , 2016, currently includes primary estimates for nearly 1000 galaxies and secondary estimates for many thousands more, and growing.…”
