Cosmological constant: Relaxation vs multiverse

Abstract: We consider a scalar field with a bottom-less potential, such as g 3 φ, finding that cosmologies unavoidably end up with a crunch, late enough to be compatible with observations if g < ∼ 1.2HPl . If rebounces avoid singularities, the multiverse acquires new features; in particular probabilities avoid some of the usual ambiguities. If rebounces change the vacuum energy by a small enough amount, this dynamics selects a small vacuum energy and becomes the most likely source of universes with anthropically small c… Show more

“…( 8 2), a region ∆φ is traversed in a short time t global c ∼ ∆φ/V ∼ M ± /∆φ/m φ± , after which the universe crunches. The kinetic energy accumulated during rolling redshifts away quickly ∼ 1/a 6 and does not appreciably affect the crunching time [13].…”

“…More precisely, as described in[82], while the scalar slides down its potential a subdominant thermal bath is formed, due to the tiny interaction with the SM photons. When the vacuum energy crosses zero and crunching starts, both the kinetic energy of φ and the thermal bath rapidly blue-shift until the big crunch.…”
