Cost analysis and clinical applicability of the Resonance®metallic ureteral stent

Abstract: The Resonance metallic stent is a new wire-based ureteral stent that was initially developed for patients with malignant ureteral obstruction. Potential advantages over traditional stents include resistance to encrustation and to external compression, allowing for increased dwell times and the maintenance of upper tract drainage when traditional polymer stents have failed. We present a comparative cost analysis of Resonance metallic and standard polymer stent use in patients with benign urinary obstruction and… Show more

“…It has also been observed that stent replacement is not necessary in most MUO cases, as we also observed herein. In light of the above-described findings, it is apparent that the frequent replacement of a stent can be avoided, thereby improving patients’ quality of life and reducing medical costs [8, 32].…”

“…The advantage of the Resonance stent is mainly based on its long-term durability. Frequent replacement of the stent could be avoided, thereby improving patient quality of life and reducing medical costs [ 17 , 22 ]. Overall, stent-related symptoms were similar in both kinds of stents in our study, probably resulting from the super-elastic design of the Resonance stent.…”

“…Furthermore, increased time between stent exchanges has also been shown to provide a significant cost benefit. 14,15 Conclusion Both the Passage and Snake stent designs offer a lower tensile strength and high resistance to extrinsic radial compression compared with previously tested Cook Resonance and Applied Medical Silhouette stents and may offer more efficacious management for extrinsic-etiology ureteral obstruction.…”
