Cost-Based Cache Replacement and Server Selection for Multimedia Proxy Across Wireless Internet

Abstract: Multimedia proxy plays an important role in multimedia streaming over wireless Internet. Since wireless network exhibits different characteristics from the Internet, multimedia proxy caching over wireless Internet faces additional challenges. In this paper, we present a study of cache replacement for a single server and server selection for multiple servers across wireless Internet. By considering multiple objectives of multimedia proxy, we design a unified cost metric to measure proxy performance in wireless … Show more

“…Zhang et al [2] present a cost-based cache replacement algorithm for a single cache server and a server selection algorithm for multiple cache servers in wireless multimedia proxy caching. They further analyze the Quality of Service (QoS) requirement in wireless streaming while introducing the corresponding QoS-adaptive proxy caching mechanisms [6].…”

“…Thanks to the availability of last-mile wireless bandwidth, wireless service providers (WSPs) have increasingly focused on the quality of wireless video streaming, with proxy caching being extensively utilized to improve the streaming quality [2]. Cache servers have been deployed in Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs) [3] of WSPs, so as to locate video content closer to end users.…”

“…Many authors have investigated the optimal selection of videos to be cached at web caches to minimize network bandwidth usage and minimize packet delay [16], [17], [18], [19]. The caching of entire videos at web caches is only applicable to pre-recorded video and aims to shorten the path of the video through the network.…”
