Cost comparison and determinants of out‐of‐pocket payments on child delivery care in Bangladesh

Abstract: The study showed that there was a huge variation of OOP, which was dependent on the facility and socioeconomic demographic status of the households. As such, policy efforts need to focus on lowest wealth quintiles to avoid economic burdens during child delivery-related activities, and therefore, financial risk protection should be provided. “…Women over twenty-ve years were shown to need more time at the rst phase of labour than younger women, leading to a higher cost. These results could be explained by an increased weakness of muscles with aging, resulting in less effective and more extended contractions, which are consistent with prior studies (6,17,19,24). Similarly, women giving birth to their rst child and women delivering after more gestation weeks were also associated with a longer rst phase.…”

“…A higher birth weight associated with a slower labour explains the longer rst phase for women delivering after more gestational weeks (14). Finally, a higher education attainment was found to lead to higher cost of birth because of overall prolonged time estimations over the complete clinical pathway, which also con rms prior documented research (6). Health awareness can lead to more care-seeking behaviour for maternal health services, explaining more clinical time needed for higher educated women (20).…”

“…This shows that the cost of delivery services has increased over the past decade. But the OOP cost of delivery care in our country is lesser than neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar . Coping mechanism employed by the majority of women to deal with OOP expenditure was borrowing of money from friends.…”
