Cost Effective Use of a Thiosulfinate-Enriched Allium sativum Extract in Combination with Chemotherapy in Colon Cancer

Abstract: In this work, we sought to investigate the effects of a thiosulfinate-enriched garlic extract, co-administered with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or oxaliplatin chemotherapy, on the viability of colon cancer cells (Caco-2 and HT-29). We also addressed the economic feasibility of a new combined treatment of this thiosulfinate-enriched garlic extract, with oxaliplatin that could reduce the dosage and costs of a monotherapy. The thiosulfinate-enriched garlic extract not only enhanced the impact of 5-FU and oxaliplatin (5… Show more

“…One of the OSCs present in garlic-alliin/s-allyl cysteine sulfoxide (SACS)-has been proposed as one of the potential drugs for colorectal cancer treatment [65]. Moreover, it was proposed that a combination of Allium extracts with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or oxaliplatin might be an effective treatment strategy for colon cancer patients [66]. The abovementioned strategy also seems to be promising due to the lower doses of chemotherapeutics needed to achieve similar clinical outcomes compared to chemotherapy alone.…”

“…Various Allium extracts, aqueous or alcoholic, were tested individually as a single agent treatment or combined with cancer therapeutically drugs in several cancer lines like oral and lung [ 34 ], breast, cervical, colon and liver [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ], leukemia [ 40 ], and squamous carcinoma [ 41 ]. Allium sativum extracts were also proven to have cytotoxic effects on multidrug-resistant human cancer cells by altering the mitochondrial permeability [ 42 ].…”

“…These novel findings together suggest that patients detected more tumor numbers in surgery with high CA19-9 level may need to receive intensive preoperative chemotherapy to eliminate micrometastatic disease and, more importantly, to further identify aggressive disease and select appropriate candidates for surgery. Besides, some elements could inhibit colon cancer cells' proliferation and enhance the valid outcomes of chemotherapy [ 29 , 30 ]. Additionally, the benefit of surgery and high risk of recurrence should be carefully taken into consideration.…”
