Cost-effective, vision-based multi-target tracking approach for structural health monitoring

Abstract: The displacement response of structures is an important parameter in structural health monitoring (SHM). Displacement responses can be applied in both structural performance monitoring and structural dynamic characteristics monitoring. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional contact sensors, a vision-based multi-point structural displacement measurement system equipped with an inexpensive surveillance camera and a consumer camera was developed herein. In addition, to reduce the computing time of target tra… Show more

“…The two methods of calculating displacement show close agreement. Displacement was measured at several frequencies; the minimum error of 0.195% was recorded when the displacement was 175 mm and the maximum error of 0.447% was recorded when the displacement was 10.335 mm [22][23][24][25][26]. The latest vision-based experiment was conducted on a beam having nine LED light target points subjected to two loading conditions.…”

“…Moreover, other modern sensing technologies and IoT have been introduced as next-generation data systems in SHM applications. Vision-based multi-target tracking system equipped with an inexpensive surveillance camera and a consumer camera can offer a non-contact, cost-effective, and time-saving alternative to conventional displacement sensors and accelerometers for SHM [79]. Optic fiber sensing can be used to monitor mechanical strain, temperature, humidity, magnetic field, damage phenomena, strain information, and many other physical quantities [80].…”

“…In the field of target tracking, compound events are more widely encountered in applications such as health detection, intelligent video surveillance, virtual reality, etc. In [184] the authors designed a vision-based multi-point structural displacement measurement system equipped with an inexpensive surveillance camera and consumer camera, on the basis of which an improved region-matching algorithm based on a priori knowledge of structural deformation was proposed. The design can save computational time without degrading the positioning accuracy.…”
