Cost Efficiencies of the Shrimp Fishery in Mexico: A Stochastic Frontier Analysis

Gerzaín Avilés-Polanco,
Marco Antonio Almendarez-Hernández,
Luis Felipe Beltrán-Morales
et al.

Abstract: Fishing sector fuel subsidies are designed to increase profitability by reducing costs. However, despite the number of liters of fuel subsidized in 2018 in Mexico, there is no information available on the effectiveness of the subsidies in reducing cost inefficiencies. The purpose of this study was to estimate the cost efficiency of shrimp fishing companies in Mexico, as well as measure the impact of fuel subsidies on the cost inefficiency of the sector from 2003 to 2018. The True Fixed Effects model was used t… Show more

“…On the southern Pacific coast, the catch is dominated by Penaeus vannamei. On the Gulf of Mexico, the catch is dominated by Penaeus aztecus, Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, and Penaeus setiferus (Avilés-Polanco et al 2023). Around 70% of the catch by weight comes from Mexicoʹs Pacific coast, with the remainder from the Gulf of Mexico (Avilés-Polanco et al 2023).…”

“…Small-scale vessels use cast nets to target juvenile shrimp in estuaries and bays, while the industrial marine trawlers focus on adult shrimp (Avilés-Polanco et al 2023). The small-scale fleet has around 90,000 vessels, and the industrial fleet around 1,400 (Avilés-Polanco et al 2023). Industrial vessels range between 18 and 25 metres in length and 180 to 460 kW in power (Dubay et al 2010).…”
