Cost of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus at individual farm level – An economic disease model

Abstract: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is reported to be among the diseases with the highest economic impact in modern pig production worldwide. Yet, the economic impact of the disease at farm level is not well understood as, especially in endemically infected pig herds, losses are often not obvious. It is therefore difficult for farmers and veterinarians to appraise whether control measures such as virus elimination or vaccination will be economically beneficial for their farm. Thus, aim of this… Show more

“…Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), caused by a small RNA virus, member of the Arteriviridae family [1], is one of the most costly diseases in swine production world-wide [2,3]. In Western Europe, PRRS virus 1 (PRRSV-1) is the main circulating PRRSV species.…”

“…Among others the problem are caused by high heterogeneity and occurrence of highly pathogenic strains and therefore efforts have been made to develop vaccines with a broad spectrum of effects (4,5,7,(30)(31)(32)(33). However, the opinion still prevails that vaccination is more cost-beneficial over other health interventions (34)(35)(36).…”

“…PPRSv is a multifactorial, viral infectious disease of swine with important economic implications described worldwide [25]. The economic effect of PPRSv infections is due to deaths, reduced daily weight gain, feed efficiency and reproductive losses [26].…”

“…The main clinical features of acute APP infection are depression, fever, anorexia, coughing and dyspnea [38], while the chronic form is characterized by fibrous adherences between the lungs and the pleural cavity, caused by pleuritis and lung abscesses [38]. While the economic impacts of PRRSv [26], PCV2 [22,32], IAV [34], M. hyopneumoniae [23] and APP [38] are widely reported in industrialized systems in US, Europe and Asia, their impacts on pig production and productivity in Africa are poorly understood.…”
