Costs of Acute Care of First-Ever Ischemic Stroke in Taiwan

Abstract: Background and Purpose-We sought to investigate the direct costs of acute hospitalization for patients with first-ever ischemic stroke in Taiwan. Methods-Data were prospectively collected from 360 first-ever ischemic stroke patients. Hospital charges were used for analysis. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify the main factors influencing costs. Results-Mean age was 64.9 years (median, 67.0 years), and 58% were male. Mean National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score at admission… Show more

“…We had generally assumed that the NIHSS score on admission is predictive of recovery outcome of acute hospitalization, in view of its predictive power discussed in literature [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. The results of our analyses mainly support our hypothesis.…”

“…Stroke severity on admission, measured by the NIH stroke scale (NIHSS), has been showed to be a predictor for clinical outcomes [1][2][3][4] [5][6][7], and hospital disposition [7][8][9]. However, the relationship of stroke severity on admission with the discharge outcomes of acute hospitalization after stroke is less clear.…”

“…19,20,32,33 The modified Barthel index has been demonstrated as a significant predictor of length of stay, 19 and smoking status has been demonstrated as a possible predictor of acute hospitalization cost. 34 Unfortunately, these patient characteristics were not available for our study, so we cannot compare the predictive value of these clinical characteristics to the predictive value of BASIS.…”

“…There are other hospitals providing services to stroke patients in the same area, including 2 medical centers and 24 community hospitals [15]. The study hospital is the main referral hospital for all kinds of stroke in this area [16][17][18][19][20]. All patients lived in the catchment area of the study hospital and had the same financial arrangement offered by national health insurance.…”
