Cough and its importance in COPD

Abstract: Patients with COPD most frequently complain of breathlessness and cough and these are both increased during exacerbations. Studies have generally focused on quality of life during end-stage disease, where breathlessness becomes dominant and cough less important. There are very little data on the frequency and severity of cough in COPD or its impact on quality of life at different stages of disease. Little is known about the factors that influence objective cough counts in COPD. Cough may be a marker for progre… Show more

“…This difference probably explains the moderate correlation we found between psychological domain of LCQ and SPUT-SP domain of the CASA-Q. However, sputum production is likely to mechanically stimulate coughing 17 on one hand, and sputum wet weight was related to cough symptom evaluation by COU-SP part of the CASA-Q 11 on the other hand, which justifies the investigation of this hypothesized relationship.…”

“…13 In addition, almost nothing is known about the effect of current first-line COPD treatments on symptoms of cough and sputum, and the need for studies to address this has been highlighted 12. Aclidinium bromide is a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) that inhibits the action of acetylcholine at M3 receptors in the lungs, indirectly leading to airway smooth muscle relaxation.…”
