Coumarin-based emissive liquid crystals

Abstract: Calamitic luminophores are presented based on an elongated aryl-substituted coumarin core. The substitution pattern at terminal and lateral positions were systematically modified. The new compounds exhibit smectic C and/or nematic liquid crystalline phases. The chromophores show fluorescence in the blue spectral region. The benzopyranones are miscible with acrylate-substituted reactive nematic mesogens. Uniaxial orientation of the mixed systems was achieved by surface-assisted alignment on polyimide orientatio… Show more

“…Thermotropic characteristics, photophysical, and photochemical behavior were examined for coumarin-containing side-group polymers [5] and the cyclic oligosiloxanes [6]. It was discovered that thermomesomorphism occurs in low molecular mass systems when aryl substituents are linked to the 6-or 7-position of the benzopyran-2H-one core through an ester linkage [7]. Conversely, by modifying the coumarin heterocycle with a carbonyl hydrazide function or fusing with an extra pyrazolone ring [8], hydrogen bonding between the molecules drives mesophase development.…”

“…Moreover, they exhibit an excellent and wide range of biological activity, such as antibiotic, anticancer, antifungal, ant-coagulating, anti-inflammatory, plant growth regulating agents and analytical reagents [5][6][7]. Additionally, polymeric and non-polymeric coumarin derivatives display liquid-crystalline properties [8][9][10][11]. Thus, coumarins have become an interesting molecular framework to be incorporated in numerous electronic organic materials, with potential applications in OLED, solar cells and photo alignment technologies for liquid crystal displays [12,13].…”
