Countrywide PV hosting capacity and energy storage requirements for distribution networks: The case of Switzerland

Abstract: Distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation is typically connected to power distribution grids, which are not designed to host a large amount of production if it is significantly larger than their nominal electricity demand. Given the prominent role of PV in energy transition pathways, modeling the existing power distribution infrastructure's constraints and limitations is key for its reliable techno-economical analysis and expansion. As countrywide models of the distribution grids are, in general, not available,… Show more

“…Grid operators recur to a variety of means to store energy (from existing PHS to simply balancing the grid with centralized power generation). However, the capacity of the medium voltage grid is limited to host a high level of PV penetration in the low-voltage grid (Gupta et al, 2021). It can be worth answering this question by looking at how much money would be directly available in the district by using the revenues generated by the different demand/feed-in electricity prices.…”

“…The dual variable [π] in ( 6) is related to the electricity balance at the transformer (2). It indicates how much the overall objective function changes if the electricity exchange at the transformer varies at the timestep t in period p. If the objective function of the MP is the OPEX, the variable [π] can be interpreted as electricity price (currency / kWh) within the community.…”

“…The aim in coming years is to drastically increase the level of PV integration, as it has been identified to be key on the way towards carbon neutrality [24]. Recent studies have demonstrated that the medium voltage level of the grid cannot host a large amount of PV installations [2].…”

“…The research conducted in [12] illustrated the PV hosting capacity effect on the harmonic voltage distortion of a low-voltage side, and it was concluded that there are significant risks in determining the hosting capacity without having information on background distortion. The research in [13] investigated the PV hosting capacity for Switzerland's medium voltage distribution grid, in which a battery energy storage was used to extend the PV hosting capacity. The authors of [14] evaluated the PV hosting capacity using integrated grid planning modelling approaches, in which a two-stage transmission and generation expansion model was combined with the distribution network PV hosting capacity assessment.…”
