This study assessed the feasibility of a group-based couples intervention to increase condom use in HIV serodiscordant couples in three countries (India, Thailand and Uganda). The intervention focused on communication, problem solving, and negotiation skills. Forty-three couples enrolled in the intervention (15 in India, 14 in Thailand, and 14 in Uganda) and 40 couples completed all study activities. Participants were interviewed at baseline and at one and three months post- intervention. The intervention consisted of two same sex sessions and two couples sessions with 'homework' to practice skills between sessions. The same intervention modules were used at each site, tailored for local appropriateness. Participants at each site were enthusiastic about the intervention, citing information about HIV serodiscordancy and the opportunity to meet couples 'like us' as important features. Participants reported increased comfort discussing sex and condoms with their partner, although some participants remain concerned about situations when condoms might not be used (e.g. when drunk). At three-month follow up 90% of the participants reported having been able to use the skills from the intervention with their partner. Our results highlight the feasibility of this couples group-based intervention and the need for ongoing support for discordant couples.

Three decades into the HIV epidemic, one affected group remains largely invisible: HIV-negative people in intimate relationships with HIV-positive people. Their lives are entwined with the everyday realities of HIV, whether emotional, sexual, social, or medical, yet their experiences, meanings, and practices of being HIV-negative in that context are little considered and understood. When they do appear in the HIV literature, they tend to be assigned an identity that is preconceived as inherently different from and in tension with HIV-positivity. Using anthropological theory, research literature, and qualitative interviews with HIV-negative partners in Australia, I challenge this idea by exploring the social absence, enactments, and liminality of HIV-negative identity in serodiscordant relationships.

En este eirtículo se pretende exponer la situación actual por lo que respecta a las aporta-ciones desde la Psicología al tratamiento de las personas con infección por VIH/SIDA. TVas exponer los últimos datos epidemiológicos que hablan de una enfermedad que sigue progresando a un ritmo alarmante, así como los importantes avances y limitaciones de las intervenciones preventivas y del tratamiento médico hasta el momento, en este tra-bajo se comentan los problemas emocionales que suelen afectar a las personas con VIH y la repercusión que los factores psicológicos tienen en la progresión de la enfermedad. Se hace una mención especial a una de las cuestiones más críticas en el cuidado de los pacientes, la adhesión al tratamiento, y se revisan los principales programas de inter-vención psicológica que han sido desarrollados para abordar este problema, así como para mejorar la calidad de vida de los enfermos. Finalmente, se apuntan los retos actua-les en la investigación psicológica sobre el SIDA, incluyendo una mayor comprensión en los factores implicados en las conductas de riesgo, la evaluación de la eñcacia de las acciones preventivas, la intervención psicológica en los niños y adolescentes afectados por el VIH, el análisis de la eficacia de los tratamientos psicológicos a los afectados y la atención a los familiares y personal sanitario que trata con estos enfermos. Contributíons from Psychology to treatment ofpeople ¡iving with HIV/AIDS The aim of this paper is to explain the current situation related to contributíons from Psychology to the treatment of people living with HIV/AIDS. After presenting the last epidemiological data showing an infection with an alarming progress and the important advances and limitations in the field of prevention and medical treatment up to now, we discuss the emotional problems that affect people living with HIV and the impact that psychological factors have on infection. A special mention is made to one major critical question in the care of these patients, the adherence to treatment, and the main psychological intervention programs to approach this problem and to improve quality of life of these patients. Finally, present challenges in psychological research on AIDS are emphasized including a better understanding of factors involved in risk behaviors, the evaluation of effectiveness of prevention programs, psychological intervention of children and adolescents infected with HIV, efñcacy of psychological treatments for the patients and attention to their relativos and the health providers. década de los 80 han sucedido muchos hechos que han cambiado notablemente la situación del mundo en relación con la epidemia del SIDA.
