Abstract. The energy centroids and integrated strengths of Gamow-Teller transitions in the β+ and electron-capture decay are analyzed for nuclei whose proton number Z and neutron number N are restricted to 44 ≤ Z ≤ 50 and 50 ≤ N ≤ 58. The analysis is based on data measured both with high-resolution γ-ray spectrometry and total γ-ray absorption techniques. The dependence of the considered quantities on the relative neutron excess are established after taking into account the effects due to the Coulomb interaction and mean-field level occupancies. An extrapolation of this dependence to the lightest known tin isotopes is used to estimate the decay characteristics of 100 Sn and 101 Sn. The values extrapolated for the half-lives of 100 Sn and 101 Sn agree with experimental data. Using the extrapolated values together with shell model predictions, the Q values for the electron-capture decay of 100 Sn is evaluated. The quenching factor for β + and the electron-capture decay of the nuclei under consideration here is established to be 0.56(2) with a possible weak dependence on N − Z.

Abstract. The neutron deficient isotopes 117−121 Xe, 117−124 Cs, and 122−124 Ba were produced by a beam of 28 Si from the LBNL SuperHILAC on a target of nat Mo. The isotopes were mass separated and their beta decay schemes were measured with a Total Absorption Spectrometer (TAS). The beta strengths derived from these data decreased dramatically to levels above ≈1 MeV for the even-even decays; 3-4 MeV for even-Z, odd-N decays; 4-5 MeV for the odd-Z, even-N decays; and 7-8 MeV for the odd-Z, odd-N decays. The decreasing strength to higher excitation energies in the daughters contradicts the predictions of the Gross Theory of Beta Decay. The integrated beta strengths are instead found to be consistent with shell model predictions where the single-particle beta strengths are divided amoung many low-lying levels. The experimental beta strengths determined here have been used calculate the half-lives of 143 neutron deficient nuclei with Z=51-64 to a precision of 20% with respect to the measured values.

The rare-earth region of the nuclear table around the quasi-doubly magic nucleus 146 Gd is one of the very few places in which the Gamow-Teller (GT) resonance can be populated in β decay. The appropriate technique to study such a phenomenon is total absorption spectroscopy, thanks to which one can measure the B(GT) distribution in β-decay experiments even when it is very fragmented and lies at high excitation energy in the daughter nucleus. Results on the GT resonance measured in the β decay of the odd-Z, N = 83 nuclei 148 Tb, 150 Ho, and 152 Tm are presented in this work and compared with shell-model calculations. The tail of the resonance is clearly observed up to the limit imposed by the Q value. This observation is important in the context of the understanding of the "quenching" of the GT strength.
