The decade of t h e 1990's h a s been a decade of change f o r the Severe Environments Technical Committee.T h e Severe Environments I n s t r u m e n t a t i o n c o m m i t t e e evolved f r o m t h e Arctic 1 ns t r u ni e n t a t ion which originally focused on instrumentation a n d d a t a recording in polar regions, p a r t i c u l a r l y a r c t i c acoustics. T h e committee h a s changed names twice s i n c e 1990 as t h e field of i n t e r e s t c o n t i n u e s t o expand.With t h e n a m e change to Polar I n s t r ti menta t io n Tec h n ica I Com m i t t ee , the f i el d of interest was expanded from a r c t i c instrumentation t o include i n s t r u m e n t a t i o n a n d p o l a r oceanography i n both t h e Arctic a n d .4ntarctic.
