Coupling BIM and Game Engine Technologies for Construction Knowledge Enhancement

Abstract: Interactions and collaboration between parties in construction projects are often characterised by misunderstandings and poor information exchange. Game engine technologies, when employed with building information modelling (BIM), can help address these shortcomings. Quite often, the visualisation capabilities of BIM models are not explored fully partly because of their limited interactive capability. While game engines are powerful in visualisation and interactions in the gaming industry, the literature sugge… Show more

“…Therefore, extensive research is being conducted to mitigate the interoperability issues, and different ways of integration between game engines and BIM have been developed (Zheng et al, 2023, andNandavar et al, 2018). Though BIM tools have their own visualization capabilities for adding interactivity, making the model dynamic, building VR and AR platforms, and going for extensive visualization, the game engine is a suitable option for integrating BIM data (Buhammood et al, 2020). Therefore, the interoperability between two different platforms by the developed procedures with different file formats must be tested to investigate the effectiveness of this interoperability.…”

“…Progress visualization: Progress visualisation from an as-built BIM as shown in Figure 2(e) is a valuable tool for understanding and monitoring construction project evolution. The detailed representation of actual building conditions in the as-built BIM allows for visualizations in both nonimmersive 3D viewers and immersive Extended Reality (XR) environments, such as Augmented Reality (AR) [40,41], Virtual Reality (VR) [42,43], and Mixed Reality (MR) [44,45]. These visualization methods enable exploring and comparing as-designed and as-built conditions, facilitating better decision-making and collaboration throughout the construction process.…”

“…It turned out that the BIM‐based teaching method can stimulate students' learning motivation and confidence. Besides this, the game engine is also discussed in the BIM‐based teaching to provide more friendly interactions [8].…”
