Dear Readers,In Part 2 of Leadership and Love, we explore how establishing an organization's values and living them out daily in an authentic way are critical. Only by choosing values that promote community, caring and love, and then by engaging in actions that reinforce these values themselves, can leaders create an organization that makes for a better world. Here, we share a mutual narrative to showcase the transformation taking place at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) School of Dentistry so that the successes and failures here can inform you as you lead transformational change. Our paper has segments that tell the story.
Segment 1. The invitation to Bryan Thomas, Jr -written by Sreenivas KokaAs I was completing my two-year term as Chair of the MIT Sloan School of Management Alumni Board, I met Bryan Thomas, Jr, recently appointed as Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at MIT Sloan. I witnessed his presentation to the Alumni Board and it was full of insight, wisdom and passion.I invited him to visit UMMC to see how we might improve our organization to become a more collaborative one. I was delighted when Bryan agreed to visit Jackson, Mississippi for three days and to meet different individuals, many with leadership roles, on our campus and in our School. He was hosted by our Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Inclusion, Kristin Nalls. My hope for Bryan's visit was that he could offer us perspective and ideas for us to work together better in our mission to serve Mississippi through patient care, education, research and service.
