Course of mental symptoms in patients with stress-related exhaustion: does sex or age make a difference?

Abstract: BackgroundLong-term sick leave due to mental health problems, especially among women, is a substantial problem in many countries, and a major reason for this is thought to be psychosocial stress. The recovery period of different patient groups with stress-related mental health problems can differ considerably. We have studied the course of mental health symptoms during 18 months of multimodal treatment in relation to sex and age in a group of patients with stress-related exhaustion.MethodsThe study group inclu… Show more

“…One of the core symptoms reported by these patients is the extreme fatigue and lack of energy that has developed over months and sometimes years and clinically reported to be long lasting (Glise, Ahlborg, & Jonsdottir, 2012Grossi et al, 2015). Despite considerable efforts, no one has yet been able to pinpoint the biological mechanisms that plausibly could explain the exhaustion reported by patients with ED/clinical burnout (Danhof-Pont, van Veen, & Zitman, 2011).…”

“…A few studies where metabolomics has been used to separate patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) from controls have concluded that metabolomics has the potential to be used as a diagnostic tool for depression (Paige, Mitchell, Krishnan, Kaddurah-Daouk, & Steffens, 2007;Zheng et al, 2012). Although ED and MDD are partly overlapping conditions, there are differences between the conditions that make generalization of findings inappropriate (Glise et al, 2012;Grossi et al, 2015).…”

“…Measures of cortisol awakening response (CAR) were obtained by computing the difference between the 2nd and the 1st morning samples. The cortisol decline over as described by Glise et al [12]. The basics in the treatment program for all the patients were regular visits to a physician with an interval of 4-6 weeks.…”

“…As of today, no "gold standard" biological marker diagnostic criteria [11]. There is, however, a considerable overlap between ED and clinical burnout, and practically all patients with ED could be also interpreted as suffering from burnout [12]. Exhaustion Disorder is defined as physical and mental exhaustion experienced for at least 2 weeks, caused by exposure to 1 or more stressors for a minimum of 6 months.…”
