Courtyards are traditional construction models in Mediterranean cities. In this research, tempering performance of courtyards during a two-year field monitoring campaign in southern Spain was investigated. The main objective was to identify the thermal functions of inner courtyards, analyzing the aspect ratio (AR) and the influence of outdoor temperature to offer a perspective that contributes to the development of passive cooling strategies for urban housing. This investigation also reviewed these climate modifiers, in light of the average lifespan of a building, to establish thermal tempering guidelines to mitigate the effects of climate change. The results show that, although the AR is a determining factor in maximizing the courtyard tempering potential, other parameters such as diurnal temperature range (DTR) or maximum outdoor temperature (MOT) can significantly modify the influence of the AR. The study demonstrates these interactions verifying, for the climates studied, that courtyards with AR > 3 are appropriate solutions, especially in the warmest zones, enhancing microclimate management in summer. Results evince that courtyard maximum thermal performance is related to MOT increase. This factor is crucial to establish a tempering initial potential for a given courtyard. Apart from this, a complete daily cycle analysis through DTR confirms and clarifies this thermal buffer effect.

This study aimed to determine the morphology of the residential environment of Singengu Village in Mandailing Julu between 1880 and 2019. This time frame was taken because primary data that available were refer to that range of years. This research is an interpretive historical research that narratively constructs the morphology of the residential environment in Singengu Village through four sources: archives, documents, evidence from the location, and explanations from interviewees/eyewitnesses. The result showed that the morphological component of Singengu Village's residential environment includes three main aspects, namely: land-use pattern, building layout, and the road network. The roads in Singengu Village's residential environment are quite unique because they were formed after the construction of the residential area and not vice versa. Aspects of the land use and urban design patterns have a typical Mandailing character because they are consistent with the local concept of bincar-bonom. Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan morfologi lingkungan perumahan di DesaSingengu di Mandailing Julu antara tahun 1880 dan 2019. Kerangka waktu ini diambil karena data primer yang tersedia merujuk pada rentang tahun tersebut. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian sejarah interpretatif yang secara naratif membangun morfologi lingkungan perumahan di Desa Singengu melalui empat sumber: arsip, dokumen, bukti dari lokasi, dan penjelasan dari narasumber/saksi mata. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa komponen morfologis lingkungan perumahan Desa Singengu meliputi tiga aspek utama, yaitu: pola penggunaan lahan, tata letak bangunan, dan jaringan jalan. Jalan-jalan di lingkungan perumahan Desa Singengu cukup unik karena terbentuk setelah pembangunan daerah perumahan dan bukan sebaliknya. Aspek penggunaan lahan dan pola desain perkotaan memiliki karakter Mandailing yang khas karena konsisten dengan konsep lokal bincar-bonom. Kata kunci. Morfologi, lingkungan perumahan, penggunaan lahan, tata letak bangunan, bincar-bonom.

The courtyard house is one of the oldest dwelling types, spanning at least 5,000 years and occurring in distinctive forms in many parts of the world across climates and cultures. This article takes a panoramic view and makes a cross-cultural analysis of the courtyard houses in six cultures: Chinese, Indian, Islamic, Greco-Roman, Spanish, and Hispanic-American, by addressing four areas of concern: cosmic axis and architectural symbolism, favorable orientation of buildings, socio-spatial organization, and cultural activities in the courtyard houses. It then looks at contemporary new courtyard housing around the world, which is often provided with common courtyards and shared facilities to meet human desire for social connectedness and the quest for sustainable architecture and urbanism. The paper concludes that the courtyard form is a common heritage of humanity that has a past as well as a future, because it satisfies human physical and psychological needs of a habitat. Moreover, the courtyard form has been built all over the world, and the shared meaning of the courtyard house is an earthly paradise, from which one may construe that the meaning of the world is a courtyard garden. The paper finally proposes a new courtyardgarden housing system that may have universal application.
