Cover Picture: Environmentally Benign Recovery and Reactivation of Palladium from Industrial Waste by Using Gram‐Negative Bacteria (ChemSusChem 9/2010)

Abstract

The cover picture of this month is provided by the group of Troels Skrydstrup et al., and highlights the work described in their Communication on page 1036. The work emphasizes the efficient fixing, recycling, and reactivation of palladium(0) from industrial effluents by using bacteria. For the first time, palladium could be removed from waste by biosorption on pure bacteria followed by reduction with H 2 . Initial chemical catalysis studies illustrate the potential conversion of industrial wastes into a useful catalyst. The study is at the interface of chemistry and sustainability, using environment-friendly technology, and demonstrates that industrial waste can be a new source of palladium.
