Coverage Analysis of Hybrid RF/THz Networks With Best Relay Selection

Abstract: Utilizing terahertz (THz) transmission to enhance coverage has proven various benefits compared to traditional radio frequency (RF) counterparts. This letter proposes a dualhop decode-and-forward (DF) routing protocol in a hybrid RF and THz relay network named hybrid relay selection (HRS). The coverage probability of the HRS protocol is derived. The HRS protocol prioritizes THz relays for higher data rates or short source-destination distances; and RF relays for lower data rates or large source-destination dis… Show more

“…In the one-to-many scenario, the backhaul link between the UAV and the base station from the core network bears the sum of data rates for all users [46]. For base stations with heights lower than buildings, UAVs can also ensure that the backhaul link is not blocked by employing realtime search methods.…”

“…The terahertz (THz) band enables ultra-high data rates [22]. THz communications, typically ranging from 0.1 to 10 THz, are gaining attention for their potential to support extremely high-speed data transmission, significantly surpassing current wireless technologies.…”

“…However, its effectiveness diminishes outdoors, where ambient sunlight interferes with access signals and its short-range communication becomes a significant limitation. In contrast, for outdoor scenarios, HAPS emerge as a potential solution to provide the necessary extreme high data rates, utilizing THz frequencies [22]. They can serve dual roles depending on the environment: as direct access platforms offering clear LOS communications in suburban areas, or as backhaul platforms supporting other infrastructures like UAVs in densely populated urban settings.…”
