Coverage of the hospital-based cancer registries and the designated cancer care hospitals in Japan

Abstract: Background Hospital-based cancer registries were developed to describe and improve clinical care for cancer patients. We described the hospital-based cancer registry coverage as a reference for the users, including researchers, policymakers and clinicians. Methods The hospital-based cancer registry coverage was defined as the proportion of new cases registered in the hospital-based cancer registry to the National Cancer Regis… Show more

“…We used the national HBCR data from 735 hospitals, including all cancer care hospitals designated by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan and other participating hospitals, which provided all data for cancer cases during 2016–2020. The HBCR database covers \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{upgreek} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document} }{}$\sim$\end{document} 72% of patients newly diagnosed with cancer in Japan ( 15 ). Trained cancer registrars in a hospital registered each cancer case in the HBCR based on standardized rules and criteria ( 16 ).…”

“…These data from the HBCR cover at least 70% of all cancers but this coverage may vary by cancer type or patient age. 11 Patient information for newly diagnosed cases are routinely collected by DCCHs and cancer registrars record the details of diagnosed cancer cases based on standardized criteria. We thus used HBCR data from Japan's DCCHs and other core cancer care hospitals to analyze clinicopathological features of adrenal malignancies that were diagnosed.…”

“…Monitoring the actual condition of cancer treatment is essential in improving the quality of cancer care. In Japan, the data from hospital-based cancer registries (HBCRs) of cancer care hospitals designated by the national government (designated cancer care hospitals [DCCHs]) has been collected by the National Cancer Center to have a clinical picture of cancer practice and treatment since 2007 [ 2 , 3 ]. Epidemiological information, including the incidence and distribution of age, sex, and region were mainly estimated by HBCRs and organ-specific cancer registries, and comprehensive actual numbers were insufficient.…”
