Coverage, Opportunity, and Challenges of Expanded Program on Immunization among 12–23-Month-Old Children in Woldia Town, Northeast Ethiopia, 2018

Abstract: Background. Each year, immunization averts an estimated 2–3 million deaths from diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, and measles. In 2011, nearly 107 million infants (83%) worldwide received at least 3 doses of DTP vaccine; however, approximately 22.4 million failed to receive 3 doses, and this causes large numbers of children susceptible to vaccine-preventable diseases and death. Nearly 8.4 million received at least 1 DTP dose. The aim of this was to assess coverage, opportunity, and challenges of EPI among childr… Show more

“…This is consistent with research conducted in Oromia regional state, eastern Ethiopia 52.9% [ 23 ]. However, the finding of this study is lower than those of previous studies in Jigjig, Ethiopia 74.6% [ 24 ], Woldiya, Ethiopia 87.7% [ 22 ], and Ghana 89.5% [ 25 ]. These disparities could be due to differences in the availability and accessibility of services.…”

“…This study showed that the proportion of children who were partially vaccinated was 31.4% (95% CI: 2835). This finding was higher than studies conducted in the city of Arba Minch in southern Ethiopia [ 21 ] and the city of Woldiya in northern Ethiopia 11.4% [ 22 ]. This disparity could be explained by differences in sample size and socio-demographic characteristics.…”

“…The findings also revealed that older women aged 30–34, 35–39, 40–44, and 45–49 are less likely to use contraceptives relative to younger ones (15–19 years); this corroborates a study conducted by Abebe [ 24 ]. However, our finding is contrary to studies carried out by Mekuria et al and Maxwell et al [ 19 , 25 ].…”

“…First, the information system does not effectively address whole-process vaccination management of appointments, registration, and AEFI recording. Second, most immunization information cannot be shared between facilities, cities, and provinces [ 34 ], thus exacerbating delayed/missed and repeated vaccinations, particularly among migrant children [ 35 ]. To ensure additional vaccines do not create overwhelming EPI workloads and caregiver confusion, the government must ensure IISs provide whole-process services and whole-link management [ 36 , 37 ], with unified data collection and sharing standards that allow cross-regional data exchange [ 38 ].…”
