“…In addition, this study also shows how trends in female intimate partner/family-related homicide were affected by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Prior research has investigated the association between COVID-19 restrictions and trends in gender-related killings using relatively small samples of countries (Aebi et al, 2021;Asik & Ozen, 2021), and assessed the effect of COVID-19 restrictions on crime (Nivette et al, 2021) or violence against women in general (Piquero et al, 2021;Rocha et al, 2024). This study contributes to the literature by employing a large sample of yearly data on gender-related killings from 42 countries and territories in Europe and 34 countries and territories in the Americas as well as monthly data from 14 countries from various world regions.…”

“…According to the most recent studies, violence against women is pervasive, with one in three women globally being exposed to intimate partner violence over their lifetime (Amare et al, 2024;Gedikli et al, 2023). Since the outbreak of COVID-19, women of disadvantaged backgrounds are at an even higher risk of physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime (Rocha et al, 2024). The resulting disempowerment leads to women's lack of access to education, health, and the labor market, thereby eroding their control over income-generating processes and hurting their relative power within the household.…”
